The senescence-associated secretory phenotype, usually shortened to SASP, refers to the chemicals senescent cells release into nearby tissue. These can include cytokines, growth factors, and enzymes that remodel the tissue environment.

Researchers care about SASP because it may help explain why a relatively small number of senescent cells can influence surrounding cells and contribute to chronic inflammation.

SASP is one reason senescent cells are studied as more than just inactive cells. Even though they stop dividing, they can remain biologically active in ways that affect nearby tissue.
